  • Jeff and Preston Small(Board of Advisors member) are assisting FOCUS in creating a new Fund Raising Program aimed at expanding the number of families FOCUS can provide services to.  Currently, FOCUS servers approximately 1,100 families who have medically fragile and/or special needs children.  We believe there are thousands more who could benefit, but it requires significant skilled resources and sustained financial support to do so.  As a part of this effort, The Beech Foundation will assist in creating an Endowment to help with the long term financial needs associated with reaching more families.

    ]]>         International Service Support https://thebeechfoundation.org/international-service-support/ Sat, 04 Jun 2016 06:59:36 +0000 https://thebeechfoundation.ws7.imijit.net/?p=64 Our aim here is to Bridge the need for assistance internationally with those feeling called to provide assistance and grow in their service and stewardship capabilities.

    • Leprosy Hospital Mission Trip – Guayaquil, Ecuador:  We are providing some planning and financial assistance to a group partnering with Rivers of the World (ROW) to build homes for cured patients integrating back into society.  This project will shift into high gear during April, continuing at least through the summer.  Visit ROW to learn more about the mission.
    • Amazon Villages Mission – Brazil:  Jeff is teaming with ROW and the Presbyterian Church in Manaus, Brazil to take a group of College students and others from Smyrna Campground and Presbyterian Church in Conyers, Georgia down the Amazon River.  The group will be providing Medical, Construction, and Spiritual assistance to remote villagers along the river.  This project will take place in June. Visit ROW to learn more about the mission.

     

    ]]>         2002 Academic Scholarship https://thebeechfoundation.org/2002-academic-scholarship/ Sat, 04 Jun 2016 06:54:05 +0000 https://thebeechfoundation.ws7.imijit.net/?p=62 Our original plan was to begin scholarship efforts in 2003, but when we learned in 2002 about the aspirations of Stacy Lambert, we picked up the pace.

    Stacy is currently the Volunteer and Special Events Coordinator at Atlanta Habitat for Humanity. This is quite a demanding job, but also rewarding. She recruits and places close to 14,000 volunteers each year to further Atlanta Habitat’s mission of building affordable housing in partnership with sponsors, donors, and communities. Prior to becoming the Volunteer Coordinator three years ago, she served for a year as a VISTA volunteer at a nearby non-profit, focusing on community development and home repair for senior citizens. The VISTA program is a year of service — similar to the Peace Corps — but volunteers serve domestically rather than internationally.

    The change in career from corporate to non-profit was precipitated by some promptings from God to follow another direction with Stacy’s vocation. She has more recently been prompted to further her education and is excited about her new status as a GSU graduate student. She is looking forward to learning more about public policy formation and analysis, and the overall management of non-profits — including finance, fundraising, human resources, and leadership. She doesn’t know yet exactly what God will have her do, but is excited about the journey.

    Stacy submitted an application to The Beech Foundation Board, and after the review process was complete, the Board of Directors voted to grant her scholarship support. She was formally presented with our first scholarship award on December 31, 2002. Stacy will serve as an Advisor to The Beech Foundation, helping us understand better how to support those committed to non-profit career callings.

    ]]>         Fund Raising “Fore FOCUS” https://thebeechfoundation.org/fund-raising-fore-focus/ https://thebeechfoundation.org/fund-raising-fore-focus/#respond Sat, 04 Jun 2016 06:42:10 +0000 https://thebeechfoundation.ws7.imijit.net/?p=60 Jeff serves on the Board of Families of Children under Stress (FOCUS) and is currently working with the organization on long-range planning, in addition to chairing its Fundraising and Public Relations Committee. FOCUS’ major fundraisers each year include the FOCUS Dinner Dance and Fore FOCUS Golf Tournament. We provided major sponsorships for these two events. In 2003, we will be working with FOCUS to develop a new fundraising approach to help expand the number of families FOCUS can reach with their programs.

A video is now available, in part based on a 2002 service adventure Jeff and Greta helped their children (Bethany, Brenna, Bailey and McKenzie) complete with ROW in the village of Esparanza, Dominican Republic. The family, along with college student and computer-wizard Richard Foshee, teamed with ROW to take computers into this village to help the people there establish a computer-based education capability which the local citizens will take responsiblity for carrying forward.
